She is the Liberal Democrats' education spokeperson and has also established herself as a powerful voice in the campaign against Brexit. She is a powerful and inspirational speaker and has been described by some as a possible future Liberal Democrat leader.

Before entering Parliament Layla was a physics teacher. She has an international background; her mother is a Christian Arab from Jerusalem, and her father is a British diplomat. She has lived in many countries including Belgium, Greece, Ethiopia, Jamaica and Jordan.

Earlier this year she tabled an early day motion to repeal the "Dickensian" Vagrancy Act 1824. She serves on Parliament's influential Public Accounts Committee.

Norman has also served as an International Development Spokesperson, in the Lib Dem Treasury Team, as Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and as a junior minister at the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

He was elected Chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee in July 2017.
