Committees of the East of England Liberal Democrats

Regional Executive

The regional executive oversees the work of the regional party in the East of England. It meets around five times a year, usually on a Saturday morning near Cambridge. You can find out more about the responsibilities of the regional party in the East of England Liberal Democrats constitution.

The regional executive comprises:

  • The five officers of the Regional Party: Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and Chair of the Regional Candidates Committee
  • Twelve ordinary members, elected by Liberal Democrats members in the East of England
  • Two members elected by members of Young Liberals
  • One member elected by Parliamentarians
  • One member elected by principal councillors - i.e. councillors who serve on a unitary, county, district or borough council.
  • One representative of each county co-ordinating committee (the county co-ordinating committee chair unless the committee's constitution provides for an elected
    representative)
  • The Chairs of the Management, Campaigns, Conference, Development and Policy Committees, if they would not otherwise be members of the Regional Executive
  • Up to three additional members co-opted by the Regional Executive

Regional Campaigns Committee

The Campaigns Committee is responsible to the Regional Executive for: (a) the stimulation and co-ordination of campaigning and publicity activities within the Region; (b) the undertaking of regional campaigns and the monitoring of the joint arrangements made by the relevant Local Parties for campaigning in elections to principal local authorities covering more than one Local Party; (c) the management of Regional Election campaigns for the European Parliament and for referendum campaigns; (d) the encouragement of Local Parties to co-ordinate campaigning for Parliamentary and local elections and between elections; (e) the promotion of the political image of the Party within the Region; (f) the appointment of a person to serve as Regional Media Co-ordinator and the management of the work of the Regional Media Co-ordinator; (g) providing and co-ordinating assistance to Local Parties for Parliamentary and local elections; (h) liaison in respect of these matters.

The Campaigns Committee comprises:

  • Three members elected by Liberal Democrats members in the East of England
  • Two members appointed by the Regional Executive
  • One member elected by Parliamentarians

Regional Candidates Committee

The Candidates Committee exercises the Region's powers and duties under the Party Constitution in relation to the approval and selection of candidates for parliamentary and other major elections. The Candidates Committee comprises:

  • the Chair of the Candidates Committee, elected by Liberal Democrat members in the East of England
  • two members, who have contested Westminster or European elections in the last ten years, elected by Liberal Democrat members in the East of England
  • two further members elected by Liberal Democrat members in the East of England
  • two members appointed by the Regional Executive.

Regional Conference Committee

The Conference Committee is responsible for the organisation of the meetings of the Regional Conference including the business to be transacted at each meeting of the Regional Conference and the selection of motions and reports for debate.

The Conference Committee comprises

  • Four members elected by Liberal Democrat members in the East of England
  • Two members appointed by the Regional Executive
  • One member elected by and from the Policy Committee
  • One member elected by and from the Executive of the Local Party within whose boundaries the next planned Conference is due to take place.

Regional Policy Committee

The policy committee is intended to encourage discussion and adoption of policy relating to the East of England.

The policy committee comprises:

  • Three members elected by Liberal Democrat members in the East of England
  • Three members elected by principal councillors - i.e. councillors who serve on a unitary, county, district or borough council.
  • Two members elected by Parliamentarians.
  • Two members appointed by the Regional Executive

English Council

The English Council is the governing body of the English Liberal Democrats, or 'English Party'. It meets twice a year on a Saturday, usually in London, and is made up of representatives of the eleven English regional parties and of the Young Liberals. The principal functions of the English Party relate to membership recruitment and administration; parliamentary, mayoral and police and crime commissioner candidate approval and selection; and disciplinary and conduct issues.
