Closure of Barclays Bank in Leigh - yet another devastating blow for Leigh residents and businesses
Yet another devastating blow for Leigh residents and businesses
From 5 banks to none in 2 years is pretty good going even for an industry which notoriously disregards the needs of local people.
Now Barclays, following hot on the heels of NatWest, have advised they will be closing their Leigh Branch in September.
Goes without saying this is appalling service from an industry that owes the population of this country so much.
This is another fundamental dumbing down of our high streets and services, when we are supposed to be a nation of service industries.
BUT it is also proof that if you don't use it, you lose it. They say the business in branch has dropped to 10% of users coming through the door.
Barclays say they 'are confident that access to banking remains sufficient in the local community, everyday transactions can be completed at any Post Office' . That is, of course, if the PO has the space which our very small outlets lack. Even the small numbers from each bank who need a counter service would block the aisles.
Apparently a Barclays Van will visit us fortnightly, more details to come.
However, Leigh Lib Dem Councillors will be working towards a banking hub in the town which has worked well elsewhere, and allows all the banks to provide a service still, and I will be talking to Leigh Town Council about hosting this or even as a service at the Police Station which I am working to get back into community use - so watch this space.
