THE number of cars parking in local streets during the day is reaching epidemic proportions.

Areas around Southend East station are particularly badly hit and it's commuter traffic that is mostly to blame.

Kursaal Ward residents are bearing the brunt of a council decision to stop commuter parking in the Thorpe Bay area by maintaining an hour restriction in the middle of the day. As most houses in that area have drives and garages, it is anybody's guess why this has come to pass. This upshot is that many commuters who previously used Thorpe Bay are now driving to Southend East instead. The reason is simple - they can park all day in the nearby streets. This causes tremendous problems for residents.

The Lib Dems will work to end the parking restrictions in Thorpe Bay as each area must take a share of the load.

Removing charges in the Ilfracombe Avenue car park is something else we will push for. It will encourage visitors to the Southchurch Road shopping area - boosting trade and
creating jobs - as well as providing additional local commuter parking.

We will also put pressure on Estuary Housing to introduce a residents-only parking scheme on the Woodgrange Estate.

The council is soon to publish its borough-wide Local Plan which will cover things like planning, housing and highways. We will be watching closely to make sure it contains appropriate policies to protect your interests in these vital areas.
