At Uttlesford's District Council's budget meeting last Thursday the Liberal Democrats were successful in getting support in principle for match funding, in conjunction with town and parish councils, for three more Police Community Support Officers in the district.

Lib Dem Cllr Geoffrey Sell from Stansted proposed the match funding scheme for the additional PCSOs . "A key priority of Uttlesford residents is to be safe. They want more visible policing. Our proposal will allow town and parish councils to enter into a partnership with the District Council to fund 3 new PCSOs posts in the district. The proposal will be discussed at the next Uttlesford Parish Forum on 15 March when we hope it will get the support of town and parish councils."

Melvin Caton, the Liberal Democrat county council candidate for Stansted,Newport, Elsenham, Henham and other villages, welcomed the news " Unlike adjoining Hertfordshire where PSCOs were deliberately retained by their Police and Crime Commissioner the number of PCSOs were drastically slashed by the Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner in Essex. It doesn't make sense to reduce the visibility of the police in a rural district like Uttlesford which has lost all its police stations".
