LIB DEMS CONDEMN GOVERNMENT RAID ON SCHOOLS BUDGETS

12.00.00am GMT Tue 30th Oct 2007

Liberal Democrats at Essex County Council have warned that a proposal by the government to take away cash reserves built up by local schools, could damage children's education.

The government is planning to siphon off 5% of the cash held in reserves by schools and to redistribute it to local authorities. The plans are currently the subject of a consultation.

Cllr Tom Smith-Hughes, Liberal Democrats leader said: "I am disturbed that the government could even think of such a thing. This is clearly a penalty on schools that have prudently saved up money to invest in new equipment or facilities to improve the school.

"The government claims the money will be given back to councils to spend on education, however it is hard to see how taking away vital investment in schools that are well run, is good for education. This is yet another example of government interference with local decision making in Essex."
