Norwich South MP Simon Wright has signed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, in doing so pledging his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who died during the Holocaust.
Mr Wright will be visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau later this year with Norwich students to experience the camp first hand. The visit forms part of the Holocaust Educational Trust's 'Lessons from Auschwitz' Project, which is supported by Government funding.
Mr Wight said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity to both remember the victims of genocide. I would encourage everyone to reflect on the atrocities that took place during the second world war, and the lessons that we can still learn from those events."
"I'll be visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau later this year with students from Norwich and the Holocaust Educational Trust. While mass murders may have taken place nearly seventy years ago, it is vital that every generation learns from what happened then so that we keep fighting bigotry and hatred today.
"There are few survivors from the Holocaust with us today, but I pay tribute to those who having survived those horrors continue to educate young people about their experiences."
Friday January 27th marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history - and in the weeks running up to the day, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, giving MPs the chance to honour those who were persecuted and killed during their Holocaust and encouraging constituents to actively speak out against prejudice and bigotry today.
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: "We are proud that Simon Wright is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year. It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust - as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of bigotry."
