Age UK logo MP Julian Huppert is backing two national campaigns designed to save the lives of Cambridge's elderly residents.

Julian has signed a petition launched as part of Age UK's Care in Crisis campaign which calls on the government to reform the UK care system for the elderly making sure they get a fair deal.

And he has backed the charity's Spread the Warmth campaign by signing its pledge promising to make sure elderly residents are prepared for winter and know the dangers cold weather brings.

"Our elderly people are hugely valuable to our society and we must do everything we can to protect them," said Julian. "These campaigns focus on issues which can have far reaching and even life threatening implications for elderly people.

"Too often we hear how our elderly are being failed by our care system. It is imperative, therefore, that the government does everything in its power to make sure our elderly are given the care and support they deserve.

"And we can all help to keep our elderly relatives, friends and neighbours safe in the cold weather. As a nation, we have one of the worst records for winter deaths among the elderly. This is totally unacceptable. Just taking the time to make some simple checks could mean the difference between life and death.

"I am delighted to be able to give my support to these extremely worthwhile campaigns which protect some of the most vulnerable members of our society."
