Herts Highways Crossing Count in Strike Closure Confusion

Herts Lib Dems have condemned waste by Conservative-run Herts Highways after a pedestrian crossing count - intended to assess the need for a new crossing that could potentially serve three Watford schools - failed to spot any schoolchildren using the road.

The traffic count took place in Woodside Road, Leavesden at the request of Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst. The date was set by Herts Highways.

The road is on a direct route to three schools in nearby High Elms Lane: St Michael's, Parmiter's and Garston Manor.

Steven Giles-Medhurst received the results on the count on Tuesday 7th January and queried the lack of pedestrians and children at peak times. It was revealed the count was conducted on November 30th, when many schools across the county were closed due to the public sector strike.

Stephen Giles-Medhurst said:

'We've been campaigning to get a crossing count done for months now. It now turns out that it was carried out on the day of the strike, when the usual footfall was drastically reduced by schools being shut and students staying at home. It is beyond belief. Why are Herts Highways wasting taxpayers' money on a count which was completely useless?'
