James Wright has been chosen as the new leader of Norwich City Council's Liberal Democrat Group. James, who is a Councillor for Eaton Ward, will take over from Judith Lubbock.
Judith Lubbock, who is up for re-election in Eaton in May, commented: "I am pleased to be handing over the leadership of the Liberal Democrat Group to James. James is an excellent communicator and passionate about issues such as education and improving public services. In these difficult times we need political leaders with new and innovative ideas to improve efficiency and make savings, which James has in abundance. I will offer James my full support and I am looking forward to working with him in the future."
James has been a Councillor since 2010 and a member of the Liberal Democrats since 2003. He currently runs his own IT business in Norwich. Previously, he was in charge of ICT support services at Sprowston Community High School. He is Chair of Governors at St Nicholas Priory Junior School in Great Yarmouth.
James commented: "The work that Judith has done is phenomenal both in the last year as group leader, but especially in the last 17 years as a Councillor in Eaton. This includes challenging the city council over issues such as the Greyhound Opening homes-for-staff scandal and the collapse of the council's housing provider. I hope to continue her good work and be a positive and distinctive voice at City Hall."
The Liberal Democrats are currently carrying out a consultation asking residents how they would like to see the city council save £4.6 million. The consultation can be found at www.consultnorwich.com and will close before the council's Budget in February.
